The purpose of this report is to define the criteria that I believe will enable you to identify the good systems out there from all the rest.

Background
I believe a good trading system should be considered for inclusion in one’s portfolio in order to potentially enjoy superior returns. Finding a good trading system, however, can be a very difficult process. So it becomes necessary to have a way of distinguishing good systems from the rest. Fortunately, there is a way to do this by using a demanding set of criteria that I believe must be met in order for you to consider using the system.

The purpose of this report is to define the criteria that I believe will enable you to identify the good systems out there from all the rest.

Criteria

Listed below are the key elements of the criteria set you should use in evaluating a trading system. A good trading system will meet the requirements of each key element whereas many systems will only meet some requirements. For example, a trading system may be advertised as having 80% winning trades which sounds pretty good. However, that same system’s losing trades may be 5 times higher than the average winning trade, making the system a net loser.

1. Mechanical System

The trading system must be 100% mechanical without any human input or overrides. It must also not be tweaked or adjusted as time goes on to fit current data. Also, the system algorithms or rules must not be curve-fitting or tailored to short term, non-repetitive patterns of past data that eliminate otherwise losing trades. A good way to screen for curve-fitting is to look for consistently good results over a minimum of 5 years of past data that meet all of the other criteria outlined in this report as well.

For several weeks, we had been engaged in the process of learning and back testing the Instant Profits trading system. We then enjoyed a couple hours of time online with Mr. Bill Poulos, who is the creator of Instant Profits. This was an opportunity to compare notes with Mr. Poulos and reaffirm and clarify the understandings that they had developed during those weeks of hard work.

Bill Poulos And His Lessons On Money Management

The heart and soul of Instant Profits, and any other successful trading system, is a tight money management discipline. Mr. Poulos echoed what we have heard many times before...do not risk more than 2% of your account on any one trade. That fundamental rule is the starting point for determining position sizing.

You must also be disciplined when closing positions. Losing positions can not be allowed to erode your gains.

Too often traders stay in losing positions "hoping" that the stock market will reverse course or simply rationalizing that they need to give the position more time to become profitable. It is far better to close positions that have moved against you and move on to the next trade.

Not only must you be disciplined when dealing with losing positions, but you must employ that same coolness with your winners. Develop a method for taking profits.

Once you have developed and tested your method of profit taking, do not allow yourself to deviate. Too often we allow ourselves to fear possible further upside. While we hold onto a profitable position, we risk losing those profits in a market reversal.

As you survey various trading systems, question whether money management is being properly employed. Too often it is not. Strong money management is the holy grail. Develop the discipline and employ it in your trading.

Trading System Design & Refinement

Bill Poulos began as a trader, not unlike many of us. What separates him from others is the fact that he has learned the hard lessons and has developed the discipline that is necessary to be profitable on a sustained basis.

Once he realized that the losing trades are inevitable, it allowed him to focus upon designing a system that would permit him to trade the markets effectively. Every trading system begins with a hypothesis, which must then be tested and confirmed using historical data. Skipping this step is dangerous, because you are entering the market without a reasonable expectation of what to expect in terms of profitability.

Once you have tested and refined your system, it is then possible to enter the market with realistic expectations. It is when we begin modifying our systems without first testing the changes that we risk unknown dangers.

Methodical system testing is a necessary part to successful system design.

Using Stock Options With Instant Profits

The first advice provided by Mr. Poulos is that anyone who is not well educated concerning stock options should not even think about trading them. It all begins with education. That education can be derived from self-study of various texts, home study courses, or live seminars.

If trading daily charts with Instant Profits, you would do well to focus upon the simple purchase in-the-money calls for bullish trades and puts for bearish positions. Look for a delta of .70 or .80, so that your option closely mimicks the stock's price movement.

Most trades last seven to eight bars, which provides little opportunity for out-of-the-money contracts to appreciate absent abnormally large price moves. Spreads will also suffer from the short time frame.

Trading weekly bars expands the time frame considerably. This expanded time frame makes the use of out-of-the-money contracts a more viable strategy, especially with high beta stocks.

Advanced option strategies, such as spreads, not only become more viable with an extended time frame but may also become necessary considerations when evaluating risks in addition to adverse price movement of the underlying stock. Such risks may include collapsing volatility and theta decay.

Taking The Next Step In Our Trading Workshop

It was a short session, but a lot of ground was covered. The workshop participants combed continued to work on ways to maximize the benefits of the Instant Profits system. Our back testing demonstrated that it is a profitable system, if properly implemented. Options can be incorporated into the system, but this should be approched slowly and only after you have mastered option theory.

Holding equity positions during a sustained market downturn can decimate a portfolio. An alternative is to adopt a trading methodology that inserts capital into the market at safe entry points as a favorable trend emerges, then removes capital as the trend breakdown. Based on a study conducted a few years back, about 10% of all long-term mutual-fund assets were held in index funds. Those funds offer comparatively low fees track indexes familiar to most investors. The drawback of index fund investing has been holding those positions during market downturns.

In the past several years Exchange Traded Funds have started opening up significant new investment strategies. While Exchange Traded Fund behave much like traditional index mutual funds, they have key differences.

Exchange Traded Funds are actively traded on electronic exchanges, allowing you to open and close positions during market hours. They also offer highly liquid option chains, further expanding their use as an investment and trading vehicle. In comparison, mutual funds are not exchange traded and your order to open or close will only be filled at the market close.

As a result of this expansion of Exchange Traded Funds, small investors are gaining access to a growing array of different exchange-traded index products. Each year, numerous new Exchange Traded Funds are launched, tracking everything from clean-energy stocks to the nanotechnology industry.

A key driver in the popularity of Exchange Traded Funds is the failure by many mutual-fund managers to beat the market for extended periods of time, even as they collect big management fees. Instead, many advisers have turned to a strategy of lower-cost index funds, and increasingly, Exchange Traded Funds.

Exchange Traded Funds rising attractiveness also stems from the mutual-fund trading scandals of recent years. Because mutual funds are priced only once a day, after the market closes, some insiders used strategies designed to profit at the expense of the little guy. Exchange Traded Funds are priced like stocks, however. This means tat they trade throughout the day and are not vulnerable to these scams.

Each method taught in the ETF Profit Driver course identifies a safe point in the market to open a new Exchange Traded Fund position. As such, you enter when market risk is at a relative low. Bill Poulos' money management rules then force an exit from the position, preserving capital and locking in profits, if and when the trend begins to fail.

Who Should Buy ETF Profit Driver?
ETF Profit Driver is a very well designed trading course and is well suited for the more conservative minded traders and investors among us. By avoiding individual stocks, you are less likely to experience large gaps resulting from company specific news.

The course also focuses on only taking long positions. Because you are not selling any fund short, you do not require the use of margin.

Therefore, since margin is not required, these trading methods can be used in IRA accounts as well as 401k accounts that provide the ability to buy and sell stocks. You will simply need to ability to place buy, sell, limit and stop orders.

With the use of inverse ETF funds, those that move opposite the market, you will be able to "get short" the market even in the aforementioned retirement accounts. You will simply buy the inverse fund.

As an end-of-day trading system, your activity will be limited to the evenings or pre-market hours depending upon your preference. You should be able to allocate at least 20 minutes each market day.

It is unlikely that you will place trades each day. There will be days when there are no "buy" signals. Therefore, you need to discipline and patience to wait for a proper trade setup.

Finally, you will need to be able to either maintain a suitable piece of trading software as discussed above or, alternatively, subscribe to Profits Run's service. That, combined with your funded brokerage(s) accounts is everything that is required.

This is an excellent trading course, especially for those not comfortable trading individual stocks, futures or foreign currencies. If you are able to make the minimal time commitment each evening and apply the rules sets in a professional and disciplined manner, I can think of no reason to hold back from making this purchase.
